Kelantan Floods Stranded SPM Students, Firefighters Step In to Help Them Sit for Exam!

Heavy rain in Kampung Bedal, Kelantan, left five SPM candidates stuck at home on 25 November after rising floodwaters cut off their route to the exam centre.

With the clock ticking towards their 8AM paper, the situation looked worrying until help arrived.

A team from the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) in Kuala Krai responded after receiving reports that several students were stranded. While most candidates had already been evacuated earlier, these five were caught by a sudden surge of floodwater that reached around 0.7 metres.

Kuala Krai Fire and Rescue Station Chief, Senior Fire Superintendent Nik Afsham Nik Pa, told Sinar Harian that the water rose too quickly for the students to make it through safely. A rescue team was sent in, and the firefighters transported the students out of the area using a truck, ensuring they made it to their exam hall just in time.

Their swift action meant the teenagers did not miss one of the most important exams of their lives, a small relief on what was otherwise a stressful morning.

From where we are, it looks like it is still raining. To all Malaysians commuting to work or sitting for exams, please be careful out there.

Here are some simple tips to stay safe during flood season in Malaysia:

  • Avoid driving through flooded roads, even shallow water can sweep vehicles away.

  • Monitor weather updates and road conditions before you leave home.

  • Keep important documents, medication and essentials in waterproof bags.

  • Charge your devices in case of power outages.

If water levels rise, move to higher ground immediately and follow instructions from authorities.

Stay safe and take care!
