Body Cameras to Be Introduced for JPJ Officers to Enhance Transparency in Enforcement

The use of body cameras for officers of the Road Transport Department (JPJ) will soon be implemented to boost transparency in enforcement efforts.

According to Sinar Harian, Transport Minister Anthony Loke announced during a press conference following the 2025 New Year’s Address at the Ministry of Transport that body cameras will be used by JPJ officers on duty, particularly when dealing with heavy vehicles.

He explained that the initiative aims to enhance the effectiveness of enforcement and uphold the safety and integrity of JPJ personnel.

“Equipping officers with body cameras is not only to maintain the department’s image and integrity but also to protect its officers.

“As I’ve mentioned before, our officers are sometimes subjected to verbal abuse, accusations, and insults. With body cameras, their actions during enforcement can be recorded, providing clear evidence and safeguarding them,” he said.

Previously, JPJ Deputy Director-General (Planning and Operations) Datuk Jazmanie Shafawi highlighted the urgent need for body cameras to improve the integrity of enforcement officers and foster public trust.

He noted that the use of such devices could prevent misunderstandings and disputes that often arise during enforcement activities.

Anthony further stated that he has instructed the Ministry of Transport to discuss the procurement of body cameras with the Ministry of Finance to ensure the project’s implementation.

This step marks a significant move towards increasing accountability and transparency in the enforcement process, benefitting both JPJ officers and the public.
