A Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia student (SPM) in Perak had more to endure yesterday (February 24th) than just his exams, when he found out that his father had passed away.

What’s worse was that Muhammad Haikal Iskandar Zamry was forced to see his father’s body and bid farewell one last time, just before he went in to sit for his Sejarah paper.

Pictures and videos of Haikal crying in front of the hearse carrying his father’s remains, which came to his school, Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Simpang Beluru, have gone viral on social media.

According to Harian Metro, Haikal’s father was in a coma for about a week at Taiping Hospital being treated for heart problems and diabetes, and Haikal didn’t get to visit him because of COVID-19 SOPs.

The school counsellor, Badariah Mohaidin explained the school allowed the family to send the body to the school for Haikal to see, just before it was sent to be laid to rest.

“He had about 15 minutes to see his father before entering the exam hall before the Sejarah paper started at 10am. Haikal had to sit for several papers until the afternoon. During recess, he didn't take his meals at all and kept crying," she said.

Badariah added that teachers offered Haikal their support and also gave him space to mourn.

Our thoughts go out to Haikal and his family.
