According to New Straits Times, neighbourhood chairman Mohd Tahir Abd Hamid said that they collected RM5 every month from the residents and a consensus was reached to use the money to buy the flags to usher in National Day on August 31st.
“We agreed to use the money to buy the Jalur Gemilang flags, although the fund was originally collected to be used for more important matters.
“We planned activities for the Merdeka celebration including a Merdeka run and treasure hunt. But, we had to cancel them due to the COVID-19 pandemic,” he told NST.
He also added that the residents took comfort in putting up the flags the Malaysian way, by doing a gotong-royong, including searching for sticks at the nearby bushes to be used as flag poles.
The consensus shown by the residents to put up the Jalur Gemilang flags around their neighbourhood and at their homes was something they could be proud of.

“Our residential area is not as big as others, but each of us has come together to make this year’s Merdeka celebration a success, despite things being done on a smaller scale due to the pandemic,” he added.
This looks amazing! Happy National Day, Malaysians!
