We love a good durian and wouldn’t mind splurging on a quality Musang King once in awhile, but what’s the most you’re willing to spend on one durian?

According to The Star, a wealthy businessman in Thailand forked out 1.5 million baht (RM199,289) for one lone Kanyao durian at the King Of Durian 2019 Festival in Nonthaburi, central Thailand, where wealthy fruit lovers would bid to get their hands on one of nine handpicked durians from a nearby farm.

This broke the record from the previous year of 800,000 baht (RM106,118) and exceeded the expectations of the farmer responsible for the most expensive durian yet.

I knew this was a very special durian but I was amazed at how much it sold for. I was expecting 1mil baht so for it to sell more is very good. - Maliwan Han Chai Thai

All proceeds from the auction, which amounted to 4.5mil baht (RM596,624), will be given to the farms and donated to local charities to purchase medical equipment for hospitals.

If you, like us, don’t have RM200,000 to spare at the King of Durian 2019 festival, why not check out another durian festival happening closer to home that’s much easier on the wallet?

From 10 June to 31 July, you can enjoy Durian-flavoured sweet treats, including tarts, puffs, cakes and frappes* (only available in Damansara and Cheras) from RM5.90 at any IKEA outlet in conjunction with IKEA’s Durian Dessert Festival.

Whew, all this durian talk is making us feel hungry (and poor)!
