In Malaysia, the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) Mounted Police Unit’s day-to-day function is typically picturesque or ceremonial as you’ll only see these officers on their horses in a Merdeka celebration parade.

But historically, these mounted police are police officers who patrol on horseback for crime prevention due to its height visibility that allow the officers to observe a wider area.

Their duties also range from patrol of parks or wilderness areas, and are trained in search and rescue work due to the horse’s ability to get through impossible routes where a police patrol car would be impractical.

Recently, photos of the PDRM mounted unit patrolling a residential area went viral on Facebook, shared by the Serdang District Police.

The caption read: “The surrounding community gives good feedback with the presence of police patrol to the residential area and it makes them feel safe and satisfied with the police who are also there to do a crime-preventing patrol with the horse unit.”

“The community hopes that this kind of good program continues from time to time and can increase PDRM’s image in line with the slogan of ‘Police and Society are not separate’,” they added.

This is so cool! We hope to see more of this, too!
