No More Films About Our Prime Minister Please

Our Prime Minister, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has been considered as one of the most iconic and influential people in the world. It’s no wonder that film directors are eager to turn his life into movies or documentaries.

While this might be flattering to some, his eldest daughter, Marina Mahathir, seems to think otherwise.

A new biopic of the Prime Minister’s life titled “Mahathir: The Journey” was announced to be in production and set to be released next July. Marina however, seems to think that there are just too many movies of her father.

In a series of tweets, Marina responded to this news by claiming that there has been no endorsement from any of the family members for the production of this upcoming film and that this is the first time she’s hearing of it through the media.

She also tweeted that her family would rather not have anybody releasing any sort of movies, documentaries or the likes about their family as it is just ‘embarrassing’.

Instead, she jokingly suggested that a movie should be made about our (in)famous former Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Najib Razak and his wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor instead.

To date, there has been three productions chronicling the life of Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, namely M For Malaysia, Hasmah – Bila Deh Bertemu Det and Malaysia’s Savior Mahathir.

In a report by the Malay Mail, Yusuf Kelana from the Reliance Media Group said the film will still continue production as they have already gotten the endorsement from the Prime Minister’s office and claimed that every character has a role to play in the struggle of our beloved PM.

The film, “Mahathir: The Journey”, will depict the life of Tun from 2003 until his re-election in 2018. The film will not focus so much on his political career, but more on his life outside of office just before he was re-elected. Directed by Mohamad Hatta Azad Khan, the film has a stellar cast featuring such as Azhar Amir as Dr Mahathir, Fauziah Latiff as Dr Siti Hasmah and Ning Baizura as Datin Paduka Marina Mahathir.
