Malaysians, We’re Getting Good Durians This Year!

There are four seasons in Malaysia, too! The monsoon season, flood season, haze season and our favourite… the durian season!

Penang’s durian season will be a little late this year but with better quality fruits as they are expected to start falling in May, as reported by The Star.

Tan Chee Keat, who owns a few orchards in Balik Pulau, Teluk Bahang and Teluk Kumbar predicted that the durian season would run from May to August. So, if you’re craving for some creamy and delicious durian, it’s not long now until it’s durian season again.

He told The Star that this year’s fruit quality is expected to be a lot better than last year’s.

“This is because there was intermittent rain nearly every month last year but since December, we have seen very little rainfall.

“This helps to ensure that the durian pulp will come out thick and sticky, unlike previous years where the pulp was too moist,” he added.

But despite the hot weather, which is good for the durian trees, Tan is still worried that if it becomes too hot and dry, the flowers may wilt even before pollination can happen.

“As such, we need to manually spray water over the trees in the morning to help the flowering and pollination process.

“Previously, some areas may get rainfall, which delayed the flowering or fruiting process. This year, we expect fruits from different orchards to come into the market around the same time,” he said.

Sounds good. We’re so excited!
