The days when people used to steal televisions and speakers for money are long gone... People are now stealing fish and vegetables to eat instead of high-value items.
According to The Straits Times, Mydin managing director Datuk Ameer Ali Mydin said that thefts have shifted to stealing foods instead of the more expensive items that can be sold for instant money.

“Thefts in hypermarkets like Mydin have gone up. People are stealing more. And sadly, they are stealing basic food items instead of electronics. It’s because people can’t afford to buy food now,” he said in a virtual press conference on Tuesday (July 6th).
Ameer also said that the sales of instant noodles have shot up recently since the implementation of the third Movement Control Order, because instant noodles are the cheapest way for people to fill their stomachs.
“The sales of instant noodles have skyrocketed. Do you think it’s because they are too lazy to cook? No, it’s because people can’t afford to buy anything else,” he said.
The president of the Bumiputera Retailers’ Association also added that Mydin even rolled out an initiative to help the needy and received over 5,000 requests in just 24 hours.
He also urged the government to come up with a new strategy in battling the COVID-19 outbreak.
