An elderly man was recently found at a surau in Klang, Selangor, abandoned by his own family.
In a Facebook post shared by the Selangor Zakat Board, the 68-year-old had spent three days alone at a surau in Pandan Indah, before an acquaintance took him to another surau in Subang.

The caption read: “We heard that a man was sleeping in a surau nearby, so we quickly went to help him as soon as we got the news. We wanted to help him, especially now that Selangor has the most COVID-19 cases, and he is a high-risk person, so it is dangerous.”
Not only did the authorities find the man starving and exhausted, but he also has an infection in his leg.
He told authorities that he did not have any children because he was not married.
The caption continued: “We were saddened when we heard him share his story. Before this, he was under the care of his nephew. But since his health has been declining recently, and on top of the Movement Control Order period that has been difficult for everyone, the family decided to leave him at the surau.”

The man also said that he didn’t expect his family to abandon him - His nephew had invited him to the surau to perform a congregational prayer together, however, he was already planning to leave him there.
The man is now placed at a nursing home in Dengkil, and the Selangor Zakat Board will be bearing the cost of his care as well as his medical treatments.
We’re glad that someone found him! We hope that he is doing well.
