She explained to the court that she had to care for her mother, who is a cancer patient, and her three young children while her husband is out of work.
The theft charge was prosecuted under Section 380 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum 10-year prison sentence.
The court was also informed that the woman, who is also a mother of three, had a history of theft, having committed two offenses at different supermarkets between 2018 and 2019.
She was also accused of violating Section 15 (1) (a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 at the same court for allegedly administering drugs to herself on the day she was arrested on November 24.
The woman, who was unrepresented, was given RM2,500 bail in one surety by the court, which set January 10th as the re-mention date for the second case.
Datuk Chew Chert Fong, a local businessman and philanthropist, has offered to assist the woman after expressing concern for her young children.
