A 66-year-old woman in Shanghai has made headlines after spending over two million yuan (around RM1.2 million) on online shopping, leaving her two properties overflowing with unopened parcels.

Known only as Wang, the elderly woman lives alone in Shanghai’s Jiading district. She admitted that online shopping gives her a rush of excitement, but her spending has spiralled into hoarding. Her flat is now packed wall-to-wall with cosmetics, health supplements, and gold jewellery — all bought online, many during livestream sales. With no space left, she even rented a second apartment to store her goods, while her underground garage is also full.
Interestingly, Wang revealed that her excessive shopping serves another purpose. “When people see my home full of things, they won’t ask to borrow money from me,” she said.

Neighbours have complained about unpleasant smells and pest problems around her home, prompting local authorities to step in. Yet, despite cleanup efforts, Wang’s hoarding continues.
Her situation has sparked concern on Chinese social media, with many questioning how loneliness and mental health struggles among the elderly are being addressed. Wang’s daughter reportedly lives abroad, and relatives rarely visit.
