Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah, Director-General of Health, stated that as of December 31st, there were 4,148 cases of BA.5.2 infection and three cases of BF.7 infection in the country.

Dr. Noor Hisham, on the other hand, clarified that there was no data to link serious cases or deaths to the BA.5.2 and BF.7 variants.

"Both variants are classified as Omicron BA.5 sub lineages and have not been identified as Lineage Under Monitoring (LUM) by the World Health Organization" (WHO).

"However, both the BA.5.2 and BF.7 variants are thought to have been caused by recurring cases or those who have a high risk of contracting the variant due to the high number of cases in China," he said in a statement as reported by the Malay Mail.
