Travellers passing through KLIA Terminals 1 and 2 may have noticed a new addition to the immigration process — QR code lanes designed to streamline clearance and reduce congestion.
The Immigration Department has installed 40 autogates equipped with advanced QR code technology, marking Malaysia’s move towards modernised and efficient border control. Similar systems are already in use in countries like Singapore, Japan, and parts of Europe.

What Are QR Code Lanes?
These lanes are part of an initiative to make immigration clearance faster and more convenient. Instead of handing over their passports, passengers can scan a QR code generated via the MyBorderPass app.
How Does It Work?
-
Download the App: Get the MyBorderPass app from the Google Play Store (Android) or App Store (Apple).
-
Generate a QR Code: Enter your personal and travel details in the app to create a unique QR code.
-
Scan at the Autogate: At immigration, scan the QR code at the designated autogates, which will verify your identity. There’s no need to hand over your passport during this step.
Benefits for Travellers
-
Faster Processing: Immigration clearance takes just 5 to 7 seconds compared to the usual 15 to 25 seconds.
-
Reduced Congestion: Ideal for peak travel seasons and busy periods.
-
Convenience: Automates data retrieval, ensuring a smoother experience.
Who Can Use These Lanes?
The QR code lanes are available to:
-
Malaysian Citizens
-
Citizens of 63 Eligible Countries, including Australia, Brunei, Canada, China, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, the UK, and the US.
Manual Counters and Existing Gates Still Available
Travellers who prefer traditional methods can still use the manual counters or the existing automated gates.
Do You Still Need Your Passport?
Yes, carrying your passport is mandatory for the rest of your journey, even if you use the QR code lanes.
What About Foreign Nationals?
Foreign nationals are still required to submit the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card before entering the country. Singaporeans, however, are exempt. Entry information for foreign travellers will also be verified against their passport’s biometric data.
A Step Towards Modernisation
The introduction of QR code lanes at KLIA is a leap forward in making immigration clearance faster, more efficient, and secure for travellers, especially during high-traffic periods.
As you explore new destinations, always double-check your travel documents, keep your passport secure, and arrive at the airport early to avoid last-minute stress. With KLIA’s new QR code lanes, your journey can now begin on a smoother and faster note! Safe travels!
