PLUS to Introduce Barrier-Free Toll System with Number Plate Recognition This October

A new open toll payment system using Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology is set to be introduced on the North-South Expressway (PLUS) beginning October.

The system, which aims to reduce congestion and improve convenience, will be rolled out in stages starting with the Hutan Kampung to Sungai Dua stretch in Penang.

Works Minister Dato’ Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi announced the initiative following an inspection of the new highway system, which is designed to allow drivers to pass through any toll lane without having to stop. The pilot project is part of a broader effort by the Ministry of Works (KKR), the Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM), and highway concessionaires to upgrade toll collection methods across the country.

“I had the opportunity to test the ANPR system myself and was able to drive through the toll lane without stopping. It was noticeably quicker and more convenient,” said Alexander in a statement.

The ANPR system is integrated with a digital platform that offers a range of user-friendly features, including multiple cashless payment options, electronic invoices, toll transaction history, and access to upcoming mobility services. These services will be introduced in phases to enhance the overall user experience.

Alexander noted that this move is a significant step towards the full implementation of the Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) system, which will eventually eliminate toll booths entirely and allow vehicles to maintain speed while passing through gantries. He emphasised that the new system reflects the government's commitment to improving transport efficiency and driving digital innovation.

Motorists will be required to register their personal and vehicle details online, along with their preferred payment method. Registration will be free of charge.

The Minister also shared that he had tested an MLFF gantry currently undergoing technical trials along the PLUS Highway. He expressed confidence that the trial would help prepare the industry for a nationwide rollout. He also praised the fact that the entire system was developed locally by Malaysian experts, without any financial cost to the government.

The introduction of this technology is expected to ease traffic flow, reduce waiting times at toll plazas, and offer a more seamless driving experience for road users throughout the country.
