Since yesterday (August 2), a photo has been circulating showing a branch of the Road Transport Department (JPJ) displaying a notice stating that JPJ will no longer issue physical private vehicle road tax starting from August 1st.
However, Transport Minister Anthony Like clarified that some JPJ branches have been instructed to remove such notices, and the public is still allowed to apply for physical road tax at nearby JPJ branches.
The notice was displayed because some JPJ branches had run out of physical stickers, prompting the public to switch to the MyJPJ application. It was not a policy decision.
"Physical stickers for road tax are still being issued; it's just that some branches have run out of stock, so they put up notices stating that physical road tax is no longer available. But that's not a policy decision. We are taking prompt action, and when we know a branch has run out of stock, we will continue restocking," said Anthony.
Furthermore, the Ministry has not set a date yet to fully transition to digital road tax, and citizens are still given the option to use physical road tax.
"For now, we will continue to provide both options, but there will come a time when we will say everything will be fully digital. However, this decision has not been made yet; it will take six months to a year before a complete transition to digital can be achieved," he added.
As of now, only 30% of vehicle owners have chosen to use digital road tax through the MyJPJ application.
As stated in the notice, vehicle owners can still visit JPJ counters to renew their road tax and perform checks through the MyJPJ application.

Through the MyJPJ application, you can check and renew your driving license and road tax online. Don't worry if you encounter roadblocks; just show your digital driving license on your smartphone. Easy!
Previously, the Transport Minister, Loke Siew Fook, announced that the implementation of electronic road tax and digital driving licenses for private vehicles would eliminate the need for physical road tax stickers on vehicles in Malaysia.
