BUDI95: Malaysians with Singapore Driving Licences to Be Included in RON95 Subsidy Soon

Malaysians working in Singapore who were previously excluded from the BUDI95 fuel subsidy will soon be able to enjoy the same benefits as everyone else.

Starting 30 September, the government will implement the targeted subsidy programme, which fixes the price of RON95 petrol at RM1.99 per litre for eligible Malaysians. Foreigners, however, will continue to pay the floating market price of RM2.60 per litre.

Why Were They Left Out?

The current system links eligibility to MyKad and Malaysian driving licence records. Many Malaysians who work across the Causeway are required to hold a Singapore licence, which left them out of the subsidy scheme even though they drive Malaysia-registered cars at home.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke acknowledged the issue, saying the government understands the frustrations of these commuters.

What’s the Solution?

A special registration process will be introduced so that Malaysians with Singapore licences can apply to be included in BUDI95.

“They may not be able to join the scheme immediately on 30 September, but rest assured, the government has not forgotten them,” Loke explained. Details of the registration will be announced next week.

Who Will Benefit?

The adjustment is expected to help tens of thousands of Malaysians who cross the border daily for work and had voiced their dissatisfaction online about being left out of the subsidy.

Once the process is in place, these commuters will finally be able to refuel at the fully subsidised rate—without having to surrender their Singapore licences.

In short: RON95 at RM1.99 per litre will soon be within reach for Malaysians with Singapore driving licences too—just hang tight until the registration system is ready.
