Malaysia will soon introduce a new solar energy initiative known as the Solar Accelerated Transition Action Programme (ATAP). The programme will begin on 1 December and is aimed at making better use of rooftop spaces for renewable energy generation.
The Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA) explained that ATAP continues the country’s commitment to sustainable energy, especially as the Net Energy Metering (NEM) initiative comes to an end.

Unlike the current Solar for Self-Consumption (SelCo) scheme, ATAP is designed to be more appealing to users. It maintains the principle of NEM, where excess energy generated from solar panels can be sold back to the grid. The difference is that the offset will be based on the electricity market price, also known as the system marginal price.
Another key change is the installation limit. Under ATAP, users can install solar systems up to 100% of their maximum demand, allowing them to maximise energy use for their own needs.
Guidelines and a registration system for ATAP are currently being prepared. From 1 December, both the guidelines and application methods will be made available through the Energy Commission and SEDA Malaysia websites.
