Malaysians Can Give Retired Police K9 Dogs A Forever Home Through PDRM’s Adoption Programme

For the first time in its 57-year history, the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) is opening its doors to the public, not for recruitment but for adoption!

Retired K9 dogs, once loyal partners in crime-fighting, can now live out their golden years as family pets thanks to a brand-new adoption programme launched by the D6 Division of Bukit Aman’s Criminal Investigation Department.

The move came after advice from veterinary experts, highlighting the importance of ensuring these four-legged officers are given the love, care, and comfort they deserve after years of service. But do not expect it to be as simple as picking a pup off the street. The Kedah Police have emphasised that applicants will undergo a strict screening process, making sure only capable and responsible owners are chosen to take these dogs home.

Leading the way is Goran, an eight-year-old German Shepherd from Czechoslovakia who recently retired in July 2024. Goran has already found his forever family with Inspector Lee Sheng Wey from the Perak police department. Over his six years of service, Goran built an impressive track record: assisting in 213 crime prevention patrols, keeping order at 40 public events, lending his nose to 60 crime scene investigations, and even engaging with the community in policing initiatives.

Perhaps his most notable contribution was in 2024, when he played a crucial role in solving a murder case in Kuala Ketil, Kedah. This is a reminder of just how vital K9s have been to Malaysia’s law enforcement efforts.

The programme also ties into PDRM’s plan to introduce 25 new K9s every two years, ensuring the unit continues to strengthen nationwide while honouring those who have already served.

This is so cute, we hope these pups get the love and care that they deserve after working so hard. Thank you for your service!
