Malaysian Noodles Make Global Waves, with Mee Bandung Ranked 5th Best in the World

Malaysians take great pride in their food. Our unique blend of cultures and flavours makes every dish something special — bold, comforting, and absolutely unforgettable. It’s no wonder that so many people who travel to Malaysia find themselves craving more long after they’ve left.

Now, one of our beloved local dishes has received global recognition. Mee Bandung, the rich and flavourful noodle dish originating from Muar, Johor, has been named the fifth-best noodle dish in the world by international food website TasteAtlas.

According to TasteAtlas, the heart of mee bandung lies in its fragrant broth made from chillies, onions, shrimp paste, and dried shrimp. The dish is often served with a generous mix of condiments — boiled eggs, shrimp, fishcakes, vegetables, and sometimes beef. A dash of lime juice at the end brings everything together in one beautiful, spicy, and umami-filled bowl.

The site also clarified a common misconception about the dish’s name. “The term bandung roughly translates to mixed or paired, and is not related to the Indonesian city with the same name,” the entry stated.

Mee bandung isn’t the only Malaysian dish to earn a spot on the list. In total, TasteAtlas featured nine dishes from Malaysia in their ranking of the world’s best noodle dishes:

  • Char kuey teow (credited to Singapore, with Malaysia listed as an alternate origin)

  • Laksam

  • Laksa

  • Curry mee

  • Mee goreng mamak

  • Penang Hokkien mee

  • Asam laksa

  • Mee rebus

  • Hokkien mee

Congratulations to all the Malaysian dishes that made it into the list. We are truly proud of our food heritage, and it’s a joy to see it celebrated on the world stage.
