Malaysian Durians Debut in Chinese Supermarkets; Export Value Set to Hit RM 1.8 Billion by 2030

Malaysians are undeniably proud of our durians—our beloved king of fruits that tantalises taste buds and brings a unique, rich flavour to our lives. But now, this cherished fruit is making waves beyond our shores!

Fresh Malaysian durians are now available in China, hitting the shelves of selected retail outlets in six major provinces: Beijing, Zhengzhou, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and Nanning. This exciting development marks a significant milestone for our durian industry.

On August 25, Malaysia’s very first shipment of fresh durians arrived at Zhengzhou Cargo Airport. The arrival was met with celebration and high-profile attention, featuring Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu, Henan Province Executive Vice Governor Sun Shougang, and Zhongyu Aviation Group General Manager Liu Jianmin.

This initial shipment, weighing in at 40 tonnes, includes a variety of durians like Musang King, Black Thorn, D24, and IOI. These delicious fruits will be distributed to over 1,000 supermarkets across the six provinces, making them accessible to more people than ever.

This achievement comes on the heels of the Phytosanitary Requirements Protocol agreement, signed on June 19 in Putrajaya by Mohamad Sabu and China’s General Administration of Customs Minister Yu Jianhua. This protocol allows for the export of fresh durians, a significant step forward from previous allowances of only frozen fruit, pulp, paste, and agrofood products.

The expanded access means Malaysian entrepreneurs can now tap into the Chinese market more effectively, potentially increasing their income and enhancing our economic ties with China. The country remains the top export market for Malaysian durians, with a remarkable export value of RM 887 million in 2022 alone.

In fact, 2022 set a record for durian exports to China, and Malaysia’s total durian export value reached RM1.14 billion. Durian was a leading contributor to the country's fruit export value, making up 58.6% of the RM2.01 billion total.
