Malaysia’s digital infrastructure continues to gain international attention for offering some of the lowest internet prices in the world while also delivering one of the fastest 5G networks in Southeast Asia.
At a gathering with Malaysians in Baku, Azerbaijan, Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil shared that Malaysia is now ranked among the top 10 countries with the cheapest internet cost per gigabyte. On average, users pay about 2 cents per GB.

He explained that this achievement stems from local telco providers working together and aligning their goals, which has helped strengthen coverage and make internet access more affordable for the rakyat.
Fahmi also highlighted the rapid pace of Malaysia’s 5G rollout. Within the Asia-Pacific region, only South Korea is ahead of Malaysia in terms of 5G connectivity speed. This reflects the country’s continued effort to keep up with global telecommunications advancements.
Fahmi is currently leading the Malaysian delegation to the World Telecommunication Development Conference 2025 in Azerbaijan. The event runs from 16 to 19 November. Malaysia’s presence at the conference supports its bid to retain a seat on the International Telecommunication Union Council for the 2027 to 2030 term. The country was confirmed as a candidate for re-election in July.

Although our telco providers are not perfect, it is clear that Malaysia has made strong progress and that the Government has been working closely with the industry to ensure that the rakyat receives good coverage at reasonable prices.
