Malaysia Currently Facing Slight Chicken Oversupply, May Be Able To Resume Exports Again

Just a little over two months after imposing a ban on chicken exports, Malaysia is now facing a slight chicken oversupply which puts the country in a position to start exporting the poultry again.

According to The Straits Times, the Agriculture and Food Industries Minister, Ronald Kiandee told parliament that with the oversupply of chicken, local chicken prices have been kept below the government-mandated ceiling prices, and the industry’s supply and inflation issues have stabilized.

This could open up the possibility of Malaysia finally lifting its chicken export ban that was first imposed on June 1st to stabilize domestic supply.

The minister had previously said the decision on export will be reviewed after the stabilizing measures end on August 31st.

Prior to the ban, Malaysia used to export 3.6 million chickens a month and was Singapore’s second-largest source of imported chicken after Brazil.

How interesting. Glad that we’re no longer facing a shortage of chickens!
