The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) deputy director-general (strategic and technical), Dr. Mohd Hisham Mohd Anip explained that the cold weather phenomenon is due to the Northeast Monsoon, which involves cold winds coming in from Mainland China, as well as persistent rain clouds since early November.

He further explained that when there are many rain clouds, the sun’s rays are somewhat shielded which lowers the temperature compared to other times of the year.

At the same time, he said another factor was the rotation of the Earth around the Sun in December causes the sun’s position to be far into the southern atmosphere.

“When the sun tilts to the south, the northern hemisphere will experience winter. This will affect countries like Malaysia on the equator,” he told BERNAMA.

The winds that blew from China into Malaysia in early November were expected to end in February next year and could cause temperatures to plunge as low as 22 degrees Celsius.
