Litterbugs will face a RM500 fine as the state government steps up enforcement on indiscriminate disposal of garbage under the Street, Drainage and Building Act 1974 (Act 133).

According to NST, Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi stated that he discussed the issue with the chairman of the state Housing and Local Government Committee, Datuk Mohd Jafni Md Shukor, and the mayor of Johor Bahru City Council, Datuk Mohd Noorazam Osman.

According to the Act, those caught intentionally littering in a public place can be fined up to RM500 on the first offence. 

He stressed the importance of cleanliness in Johor's efforts to become a developed state by 2030.

"The Johor Bersih agenda was launched last year, but the real challenge is to change the mindset and attitude of the people and to bring awareness about the importance of environmental cleanliness," he said in a Facebook post.
