Retake or Explore Other Fields, KPM Provides Second Chance to Students Left Behind in SPM

The Ministry of Education Malaysia (KPM) has no objections to providing a second chance to students or any party to sit for the Malaysian Certificate of Education (SPM) examination, as suggested by the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

The Minister of Education, Fadhlina Sidek, stated that besides the second chance opportunity, KPM is also offering students who obtained unsatisfactory results to explore other fields, including Technical Education and Vocational Training (TVET).

"We always keep the opportunity open, and that's why we welcome what the Prime Minister mentioned yesterday regarding the second chance and the opportunity to retake the SPM examination. We will provide assistance in determining their direction, guidance, counseling, and additional support facilities if needed," she said as quoted by Utusan Malaysia on June 19.

It is also reported that the government will be identifying approximately 30,000 SPM-eligible candidates for the year 2022 so that they can be absorbed into existing training programs.

Currently, it is estimated that 30,000 students did not attend the SPM examination and must continue their lives without the relevant certificate required to apply for various positions, including government jobs.

At the same time, Fadhlina also explained that much assistance and guidance will be provided to the affected group, in addition to giving them a second chance to sit for the SPM examination.

"In our detection system at the KPM level, we have a detection system for this group for a period of two years. So within those two years, we can make various interventions. For example, we can strengthen Form 6, especially for B40 students, to continue their education at that level, pursue TVET, and retake specific subjects if students wish to do so," she added.

Furthermore, Fadhlina hopes that state foundations can assist this group to ensure that they make the best use of the second chance opportunity.
