The video, which has since gone viral, shows several individuals surrounding the turtle, gripping its shell and limbs as it visibly struggles. At one point, the divers appear to be posing for photos while restraining the distressed creature.
Marine experts warn that such actions cause immense stress to the animal, potentially leading to serious injury or even death. Under Malaysian law, sea turtles are a fully protected species, and disturbing them in any way is a punishable offence.
The Tropical Research & Conservation Centre (TRACC) in Semporna, which brought attention to the incident, is urging anyone with information about the divers or the location of the event to come forward.
Many online users have condemned the act, calling for strict enforcement of wildlife protection laws and even the revocation of the divers’ licences. Conservationists stress that reckless interactions with marine life not only harm ecosystems but also damage Sabah’s reputation as a world-class diving destination.
Authorities are investigating the incident, and members of the public who have information are encouraged to report it to TRACC or the Sabah Wildlife Department. This case serves as a stark reminder that marine life should be admired from a distance, not exploited for personal entertainment.
