A public university student claimed to have lost RM42,500, which was purportedly used to purchase video games that were promoted on Instagram.

On Friday (March 4th) the victim claimed that he was interested in contacting the owner of the Instagram account after discovering that the “game currency” was sold at a lower price than other online shopping platforms, according to Pahang Commercial Crime Investigation Department chief Supt Mohd Wazir Mohd Yusof.
"The victim said that the amount offered was merely RM600 for 38,400 units of that currency, prompting him to send the money to the suspect's account in the evening of the same day," Supt Mohd Wazir said, as reported by BERNAMA.
"However, the suspect was reported to have called the victim to request more money for a variety of reasons, including currency exchange before it could be deposited to the victim's video game account," he said in a statement on Sunday (March 6th).

According to Supt Mohd Wazir, the victim claimed to have spent his own funds of RM1,705 but still had to make payments to have access to the currency, forcing him to utilize his mother's money.
The victim's mother, a government retiree, is reported to have previously given the victim her online banking login to conduct his personal payment activities.
"After making 10 online money transactions to three different accounts in the span of two days, the victim then realized that he had been cheated," he added.
The 22-year-old victim then filed a report with the Jaya Gading police station, prompting a follow-up inquiry for cheating under Section 420 of the Penal Code.
