In case you missed it, parts of a flyover still under construction collapsed along the Sungai Besi–Ulu Klang Elevated Expressway (SUKE) yesterday evening (March 3rd), and one van was trapped underneath.

It’s been confirmed that two out of the five people in the van have died from the incident.

The two women who died, both local factory workers in their 40s, were pronounced dead at the scene, with three more passengers, one man and two more women, surviving the incident but suffering serious injuries.

It’s understood they were on their way to work when disaster struck.

It took over two hours to clear the debris, after the incident was reported around 6:30pm.

“At 8:53pm the first survivor, a 47-year old man who was driving the van was successfully extracted from rubble where he suffered serious injuries,” said Kuala Lumpur Fire and Rescue Department director Nordin Pauzi.

“At 9:19 pm, the fourth victim, a woman in her 40s, was pulled out where she was later pronounced dead by Health Ministry (MOH) officials on site. Then at 9:26pm, the final fifth and final victim, also a woman in her 40s, was successfully removed from under the rubble and also later pronounced dead at the scene by MOH officials present,” he further explained.

Highway concessionaire Projek Lintasan Kota Holdings Sdn Bhd (Prolintas) said the accident occurred when an “overloaded trailer” crashed into a scaffolding at the site.

“The trailer is not involved or linked to the construction of the SUKE highway in any way,” it said.

Meanwhile, Kuala Lumpur Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department chief Zulkefly Yahya said police have detained the driver of the trailer to facilitate investigations.
