Amid the Recovery Movement Control Order (RMCO), popular establishments may find it hard to ensure social distancing among its patrons - and hawker centers are definitely one of them.

The Penang Island City Council (MPPP) recently ordered three hawker centers to close, for failing to enforce coronavirus SOPs properly.

Huge crowds at the outlets, located on Campbell Street, Hutton Lane and Karpal Singh Drive, have made it difficult for the stall owners to ensure social distancing.

State executive councillor in charge of housing, local government and town planning Jagdeep Singh Deo said today, that the state government “cannot compromise” on matters such as these.

Under the guidelines in place, all patrons and hawkers are required to put on face masks and practise social distancing, with only two persons allowed to sit together at the same table.

Penang is no longer a COVID-19 green zone, with seven active cases, some believed to have come from two clusters - Sivagangga and Tawar - in neighbouring Kedah.

As much as employers should find a way to fully enforce social distancing guidelines, we too must do our part to help them out by making sure that we ourselves strictly adhere to the SOPs.

Practise social distancing and wear a face mask, people!
