Things Are Starting To Fall Apart At Bayern Munich

Holders Bayern Munich are out of this season’s Champions League! The Bundesliga giants beat PSG 1-0 in the second-leg of their quarterfinal on Wednesday, but make their exit on away goals, with the tie level at 3-3 on aggregate.

The damage was done in the first leg in Munich, where PSG put on a masterclass of a performance to outplay the Bavarian side 3-2. That defeat on home soil was Bayern’s first loss in 19 matches in the competition…a run that stretched all the way back to March 2019.

And although Hansi Flick’s side managed to come away with a 1-0 win in the return leg in Paris…it wasn’t enough to avoid the embarrassment of an early exit for the defending champions. As if that wasn’t bad enough, there are now rumours of unrest among the Bayern hierarchy.

Word has now come out of an internal battle between Flick and Bayern sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic, particularly over the club’s transfer policy. Things are so bad that Flick is reportedly considering leaving as soon as this summer. These rumours were further fuelled by claims that the 56-year-old is the favourite to take over the Germany national team, when Joachim Low vacates the post after Euro 2020.

Under Flick, Bayern won the Champions League, German Cup, Bundesliga and UEFA Super Cup titles last season. If he leaves, he’ll be the latest member of the quadruple-winning side to exit after Thiago Alcantara last summer, and David Alaba and Jerome Boateng, who are both not renewing their contracts.

Add to this the fact that Bayern have not found suitable cover for their star striker Robert Lewandowski, and you can forgive the fans for wondering if the German giants will be as mighty next season.
