The Russian billionaire owner says he is doing so in the best interest of the club in light of recent developments, referring to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Since the invasion, Abramovich - like many other Russian oligarchs - has been under pressure to face sanctions from governments worldwide over their reported ties to the government in Moscow.

The businessman, however, continues to deny any close ties to Russian president Vladimir Putin.

But politics aside, the impending sale of Chelsea FC leaves the London club facing an uncertain future.

Since Abramovich’s takeover Chelsea have gone on to become one of the most successful teams in world football, amassing an impressive haul of 21 trophies.

When he bought them in 2003, The Blues had not won a league title since 1955.

But thanks to the billionaire’s deep pockets (he is estimated to have spent a total of 2.1 billion pounds on players) they went on to win five Premier League trophies, in addition to two Champions League crowns, two Europa League titles and five FA Cups among others.

Much of that success is also down to Abramovich’s passion for the club. He had a direct hand in numerous signings and ended up firing and hiring a total of 15 managers during his reign...all in the pursuit of excellence.

You can question his methods, but you cannot deny that he has guided Chelsea from a small London club to two-time European champions.

With all that success under such a passionate owner…Blues fans will no doubt be left wondering what the future holds for them once their beloved club is sold.

What we know so far is at least one consortium led by Swiss tycoon Hansjörg Wyss is interested in a purchase, with Abramovich believed to be seeking around 3 billion pounds for Chelsea.

Wyss is a prominent donor to politically liberal and environmental causes in the US but is not known to have any significant investments in sporting ventures.
