The government is not ruling out the possibility of placing Kuala Lumpur under an Enhanced Movement Control Order (EMCO), if the number of new daily COVID-19 cases there continues to increase.
During his daily press briefing yesterday (November 16th), Senior Minister (Security) Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said that the move will be considered if recommended by the Health Ministry (MOH).
“It would be decided by MOH. They will evaluate each area and decide if there is a need for an EMCO to be enforced. So far, there are no new suggestions for the EMCO to be implemented in KL, but just to maintain the Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO),” he said.
469 new COVID-19 cases were reported in KL yesterday, with most of the new cases from the Damanlela cluster in Damansara, primarily involving foreign construction workers.
The Klang Valley recorded a total of 661 cases, with 185 in Selangor and one case in Putrajaya, making up more than half, or 54.7% of the 1,208 new infections recorded yesterday.
Health Director-General Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah, meanwhile, dismissed claims that the situation in these areas is getting worse, and insisted the CMCO is working.
“I don't see the CMCO as a failure. It is an option for us to strike a right balance to save lives and livelihoods. Should we enforce the MCO, the impact on the economy would be huge.
“The issue with the CMCO is there is still movement, but we hope we are able to reduce the movement of people and hopefully bring down the infectivity rate even lower,” he said.
