Please Monitor Your Kids Online!

The Internet is a wonderful place brimming with information, and with seemingly endless capabilities of connecting people from across the globe.

However, the misuse of the Internet can bring about cyber threats that can jeopardize one’s security, particular today’s youths, who have been exposed to technological wonders like smartphones, tablets, and other digital devices from an early age.

This, as the younger generation is facing a higher cybersecurity risk due to a lack of effective parental control.

According to the Communications and Multimedia Ministry, this was among the main findings in a recent study conducted by Cybersecurity Malaysia, with assistance from the Education Ministry.

The study also found that Internet addiction has caused an increased cybersecurity risk among youths.

Among the signs of Internet addiction include sleeping late, preferring to use smart devices instead of interacting with friends, as well as getting angry when barred from using such devices.

As such, it is vital that parents play their part to monitor their children in efforts to build a first-class digital generation.

Communications and Multimedia Minister Tan Sri Annuar Musa says parents can no longer view providing their children with smart devices in the context of facilitating online studies while leaving them unsupervised.

He stressed that the current focus should be on building a values system among individuals and family institutions to prevent the misuse of the Internet.

Tan Sri Annuar adds that cyber threats are real, as they can not only affect national security, but also affect the quality of life of Malaysians and our communities.
