For the past year and a half…Bayern Munich were the undisputed kings of Europe.
The German giants were unbeaten in 19 of their last Champions League matches – winning 18 of these, including last season’s final. That remarkable record, however, came to a screeching halt when Bayern fell to a 3-2 defeat to PSG in the first leg of the Champions League quarterfinal.
It was the first time the Bundesliga side had tasted defeat in Europe since March 2019.
Hansi Flick’s side were poor at both ends. Their defence had no answer to the pace of PSG’s Kylian Mbappe, who scored twice. While in attack, Bayern had 31 shots on goal…but only managed to convert two.
They were obviously missing the services of their injured star striker Robert Lewandowski, who will also be absent from the second leg with a knee problem.
The Bavarian side now face an uphill task in Paris next week. With 31 shots on goal, they can clearly create chances…but it remains to be seen if they can convert these opportunities without Lewandowski. As for PSG…the French champions are on a roll, having also knocked out Barcelona in the last-16.
Their three crucial away goals now make them huge favourites to add Bayern’s scalp to their collection as well.
The second leg of PSG vs Bayern Munich takes place on the morning of Wednesday, April 14.
