Remember the smoking ban that was introduced on January 1? The stipulated punishment was a maximum fine of RM10,000 or a jail term not exceeding two years for those who smoke within 3 metres of eateries. The six-month period of education prior to enforcement has now been extended until the end of the year.
Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad said that there were considerations to punish those who violate the ban with social work like cleaning toilets, collecting rubbish and cutting grass. He added that the punishments be more effective than fines, as those who could afford payment would simply repeat the violations again.
Dr Dzulkefly also reminded employees of the ministry to respect the smoking ban so as to be an example to the public.
According to Dr Dzulkefly, 129,180 premises were inspected to date with more than 30,698 smoking warning notices issued.
