While there was talk of keeping them alive, unfortunately, the iconic ferry service in Penang sails for the last time today (December 31st), and will cease operations after midnight.

Many Penangites, of course, took the chance to take one last ride, while netizens around the country also shared their memories and experiences, and they’re all so emotional!

Starting tomorrow, Penang Port Sdn Bhd (PPSB), which will take over the ferry service from Prasarana Malaysia Bhd, will use fast passenger boats between the mainland and the island, while only one ferry, Pulau Angsa, will be used to transport motorcycles and bicycles.

This is only until the passenger-only water buses and vehicle transporters are introduced by July 2022.

Earlier this morning, former Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng also went on his final ferry ride, and lamented that Penangites will never forget and forgive those responsible for retiring the car-carrying ferries.

He even took to Twitter to share his disappointment.

Let’s hope the government will at least put these ferries to good use, so that their 126-year history lives on.
