It was the perfect response from the Red Devils, who had failed to win their previous two games.
The match at Old Trafford, however, has taken social media by storm for the sheer number of records that were either equaled or broken.
If you’re having trouble keeping up, here’s a quick breakdown of the stats:
- Southampton debutant Alexandre Jankewitz was sent off just two minutes in. He is the first player since Serge Aurier in 2017 to get red-carded on his first EPL start.
- Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Marcus Rashford, Edinson Cavani, Anthony Martial, Scott McTominay, Bruno Fernandes and Daniel James all got on the scoresheet for the Red Devils. It was only the second time in Premier League history there have been seven goal-scorers in a single match.
- The final scoreline equals the Premier League record for the highest winning margin. Only two other matches in the Premier League era have ended 9-0 : Man Utd vs Ipswich in 1995 and Southampton vs Leicester last season.
- This means United are the first team in Premier League history to win 9-0 twice…while Southampton are the first team to lose by that scoreline twice.
- To rub salt into the Saints’ wounds, this morning’s loss was the biggest away defeat in the club’s history.
- This is the first time since 2012/2013 that United have won both home and away league games against Southampton.
- The win also means that United have now scored six or more goals in a Premiership match twice this season – the first time they’ve done so since the 2000/2001 campaign.
At this rate… Man Utd vs Southampton could just end up breaking the record for the most number of records broken!
