A man was determined to swim across the straits of Penang from the Tanjung City Marina jetty because he didn’t get police permission to travel inter-district to visit his friend.

...and because of that, he was willing to swim across the Penang strait.

According to Astro AWANI, the 28-year-old man started swimming at around 6 pm but got tired and had to turn back.

“The man said he was determined to swim to Seberang Perai because he wanted to see his friend after failing to get a cross-district permit from the police,” said North East District Police chief, Assistant Commissioner Soffian Santong.

He added that the man was from Bayan Lepas, Penang and is currently unemployed. Police also did not find any identification, and he only stated his name and IC number orally.

The police managed to contact the man’s mother and they were informed that he had not returned home for a long time and is believed to be living on the streets as a homeless person.

Further investigations found that the man has a drug addiction problem.

Photos of the incident that happened on Wednesday (July 14th) have been circulating social media after he was barred from boarding a ferry, as he did not have a valid permit from the police.

He then decided to jump from the ferry before he was rescued by employees of the Penang Port.
