Sometimes, digging up the past can be a good thing.

Members of the All Women Expedition to Antarctica (Aweta) are on a mission to retrieve a time capsule planted by Sharifah Mazlina in 2004. This was during the explorer’s first mission to Antarctica!

Free Malaysia Today reported that an Aweta spokesman said the team set foot in Antarctica at 2am (Malaysian time), led by polar adventurer Dr Sharifah Mazlina Syed Abdul Kadir herself.

“They have embarked on their adventure and their first journey is from 89 degrees south to the South Pole. So far, the team has managed to travel 2km and the weather there is sunny with the temperature at -29 degrees Celsius,” she told Bernama yesterday.

She added that they were trying to adapt to the conditions there but everyone was in pretty good shape. We can only imagine how harsh the conditions there must be!

Given that the capsule was planted 14 years ago in the South Pole, there is a high chance it may have moved around or become submerged. Or maybe, it may be inside the US Research Centre area.

The team of explorers is made up of pharmacist Nurul Atiqah Tamarun, 31, army corporal Siti Jumaidah Bensali, 34, and home ministry administrative and diplomatic officer Salehah Abu Nor, 33. They began the mission on 18 December and will end on 3 January 2020.

Best of luck to them!
