Long Christmas Weekend Caused The Increase Of COVID-19 Cases In Kelantan

The influx of Malaysians that balik kampung during the Christmas holidays have caused cases to rise in some parts of Kelantan.

The State Housing, Local Government and Health Committee chairman, Dr. Izani Husin said that Malaysians from all over returning to Kelantan were behind the increase of COVID-19 cases in the state, despite the fluctuation in the number of new cases.

According to Astro Awani, those who were from the red zone areas, mainly Selangor, contributed to the number of new cases in Kelantan.

On Sunday (27 December), Kelantan recorded 31 new COVID-19 cases, and 11 of them involved transmissions from the red zone areas, namely Selangor, which believed are from those who balik kampung during the long Christmas weekend.

The Kelantan state government has requested to enforce an Enhanced Movement Control Order (EMCO) at Pondok Darul Naim which is the area of the Halban cluster.

“My advice is, when you are coming home to visit your parents, or your family, just stay at home. Do not go out freely because this could lead to the spread of the COVID-19 virus in the community,” said Dr. Izani.

He also added that the cause of the spread of the virus is mainly from group gatherings involving makan-makan and meetings being held in crowded areas.

Kelantan recorded 54 new COVID-19 cases on Saturday (26 December) alone, which is a new high for the state.
