In a strange string of incidents believed to be linked to one another, police in Ipoh, Perak are on the lookout for suspects who could be behind the poisoning of 50 stray dogs there over the past three weeks.

The most recent of these incidents saw nine carcasses of wild dogs found near the factories in Puncak Jelapang on Christmas Day.

Ipoh District Deputy Chief of Police, Superintendent Mohamad Nordin Abdullah said a report regarding the discovery of all the carcasses was lodged by a 40-year-old woman, who is a resident in the area.

“The woman claimed to have seen five men in the alley near her residence but were not sure what they were doing. She then found seven more dog carcasses behind the factory near her residence and she believes all the dogs were poisoned by irresponsible individuals,” he told Harian Metro.

Although no one has been identified as a suspect, the case is being investigated under Section 428 of the Penal Code for committing mischief by killing or maiming an animal.

According to The Star, local animal welfare groups believe that the perpetrators have been feeding the dogs chicken heads laced with poison after finding evidence at the crime scenes.

The Stray Animal Feeders of Malaysia (SAFM) took to Facebook to urge anyone with information regarding these incidents to come forward, and it also condemned the cruel act.

“SAFM has reminded the public multiple times that poisoning stray animals will not solve their neighbourhood stray problems. We will strive to uphold justice for these dogs,” it wrote.

We hope whoever’s behind these heinous acts will be brought to justice soon!
