Many cyclists were recently caught off-guard following internet claims that bicycles may soon be required to obtain license plates.

But don't worry, the Transport Ministry says there are currently no such plans, adding that the matter has not even been officially brought to its attention.

All this came up after the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS) called for such an implementation as bicycles are becoming more popular.

However, the Ministry stressed that comments made by MIROS are not policy.

It says many factors need to be looked into if it intends to do so, like the health and safety of road users and pedestrians.

As such, the Ministry adds that it will continue to hold safety programmes for cyclists.

In the meantime, all cyclists have been advised to obey traffic rules and prioritise safety when riding their bicycles on the road, as they are still bound by all relevant traffic rules under the Road Transport Act 1987.

Stay safe on the roads, two-wheelers!
