Leaders Man City currently have an eight-point advantage over Man United, which on the surface, would appear to be a comfortable lead.

Look a little closer, though, and you’ll find reasons for City to be a little nervous as the league campaign draws to an end.

Firstly, Pep Guardiola’s side have the added responsibility of also playing in the League Cup final against Tottenham and featuring in the Champions League semi-finals against PSG.

These distractions, and potential injuries that could arise from the extra matches could come back to haunt City’s Premiership push.

Case in point - City recently learned that Kevin De Bruyne is facing a lengthy layoff due to an ankle problem he picked up in the FA Cup defeat to Chelsea. His possible absence couldn’t come at a worse time, when the club needs all its players fit to push for titles on multiple fronts.

And then there is the issue of an in-form Man United. The Red Devils may be trailing their neighbours points-wise…but they are not taking their eyes off the prize.

Five wins in their last five matches has left Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side quietly confident that they can pull off a few surprises before the end of the season.

Their current situation will be one that both Manchester clubs are very familiar with.

Back in 2012, it was United who were leading City by eight points after 32 games.

That year, however, ended with City winning the Premier League title on goal difference, after their famous dramatic win over QPR on the final day.

With that campaign fresh in their memory, City will do well to remember that there could potentially be many more twists and turns before the title is wrapped up.
