Grand Slam tennis finally returns with the US Open that begins today (August 31st).

It is the first major tournament since the sport was halted due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

However, the shadow of the coronavirus still looms large over the event.

For one, no spectators will be allowed in, as per the usual coronavirus SOPs.

This year's edition will also be missing a number of big names, with defending champions Bianca Andreescu and Rafael Nadal, in addition to Ashleigh Barty, Simona Halep and Nick Kyrgios all pulling out due to concerns about the coronavirus.

Another fan-favourite, Roger Federer, will also be absent as he continues his recovery from injury.

But don't think that this year's event will be a dud because of the high-profile withdrawals.

On the contrary, their absence opens up many interesting possibilities for the remaining players to write their names in the history books.

Novak Djokovic is now clearly the favourite for the men's title, with Nadal and Federer not there to stop him.

The world number one is seeking his 18th Grand Slam title.

The absence of two out of the three biggest names in the men's game also boosts the chances of Dominic Thiem, Alexander Zverev and Daniil Medvedev, who now have a golden opportunity to claim their maiden major honour.

Don't rule out Serena and Naomi

The thinner field in the women's draw also paves the way for Serena Williams to add another title to her already-impressive collection.

The American is looking for a record-equalling 24th career Grand Slam, which would draw her level with Margaret Court on the all-time list.

Also keep an eye out for former champion Naomi Osaka - who defeated Serena in the 2018 final -  and teenage sensation Coco Gauff, who's proven that she's capable of pulling off an upset or two.

You can catch the US Open LIVE on Astro channels 815 and 816!
