The Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) K9 unit’s German Shepherd is the first dog to receive an appreciation award for the Pahang police.

According to the New Straits Times, the canine was honoured with the ‘Jasamu Dikenang’ medal by the Pahang police contingent, after successfully detecting a theft suspect in Pahang in November last year.

Lao Wu, who is five years and six months old, received the medal from the police chief, Datuk Abd Jalil Hassan during the contingent’s monthly assembly in Kuantan.

Abd Jalil was represented by his deputy, Datuk Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri, who handed over the medal to Sergeant S. Sanmugam.

Sanmugam, who has been Lao Wu’s handler since 2015, proudly put the medal around the dog’s neck.

BERNAMA reported that Lao Wu was recognised for his efforts in locating a vehicle thief that was shot in the leg by police earlier but fled more than 4 kilometers in an oil palm plantation in Felda Sungai Tekam, Jerantut.

Sanmugam said, “Lao Wu was so eager to look for the suspect that I was left behind as I tripped and fell twice due to the dark surroundings and uneven ground, before we reached a house in the plantation.”

Lao Wu then led them back into the palm oil plantation until they spotted a river at around 4.00 AM. The canine started to cross the river leading the police to believe that the suspect had been there.

Around 6.00 AM, they found bloodstains near the river.

“Lao Wu then continued to guide us to a house in the area and we eventually found the suspect in the backyard around 10.45 AM. The suspect was in a weak condition and begged me to not let go of the dog.”

We are so happy for him. Good boy, Lao Wu!
