According to Astro AWANI, its chief, Superintendent Dzulbaharin Ismail said they received the report of the incident at 7:11 pm.

A team of officers and members of the Kinabatangan IPD Criminal Investigation Division, together with the Kinabatangan Department (JHL), Sepilok Veterinary Unit and Kinabatangan Wildlife Rescue Unit was deployed to the scene.

“The location is located about 66km from Kinabatangan town and upon arrival, the investigation found that the carcass was a 25-year-old female Borneo pygmy elephant.

“Physical examination found that no organs of the elephants were missing and the elephant is believed to have died three to four days from the date of discovery,” he said.

He added that the result of an autopsy revealed that the death was due to severe inflammation of the internal organs, such as the intestines and stomachs, which caused those organs to fail to function.
