Famous Nasi Kandar Restaurant In Penang Ordered To Shut Down

A trip to Penang is never complete without Nasi Kandar. But next time you’re in Penang and thinking of indulging on this sinful gravy-laden goodness, you might want to think again.

A famous nasi Kandar outlet located in the heart of Georgetown was given a 14-day closure notice due to cleanliness issues at the premises.

The raid conducted by Penang Island City Council (MBPP) last Thursday (8th Jan) also found two mini markets in Little India not meeting the cleanliness standards and were issued the same notice.

"We also found rats at the time of our inspection, so we decided to issue the 14-day closure notice to the three premises until Jan 21," said MBPP environment health licensing officer, M. Bawani.

During their raid, another restaurant was also issued a compound on suspicion of food cross contamination and was ordered to cease their operations for at least three days to allow for cleaning works.

The news of these closures has alarmed many foodies online, who probably have had their fair share of Nasi Kandar while they’re in Penang.

Follow-up inspections will be conducted in these restaurants, as MBPP vowed to ensure a quality standard of cleanliness in restaurant premises as their utmost priority.

As for us, we’ll be on the lookout for anything suspicious in our Nasi Kandar the next time we’re in Penang!
