A young male elephant, between the ages of four and five, was found dead on the side of the road along the East-West Highway (JRTB), Gerik - Jeli, near the Banun Resettlement Plan (RPS) junction yesterday morning (January 17th).
Department of Wildlife and National Parks (PERHILITAN) director Yusoff Shariff said the baby elephant involved is believed to have been hit by a lorry or bus, but as of yesterday afternoon, no party has come forward to make a confession regarding the incident.
It’s understood that the elephant had suffered injuries in several parts of the body, and has been moved and buried in a nearby forest area by the department’s Gerik office.
As PERHILITAN has said many times before, Yusoff once again reminded the public to be extra cautious when driving through forest areas, especially along the East-West Highway.
He added the area is well-known as a wildlife habitat, especially for elephants, which are often found crossing the road in some areas.
PERHILITAN has put up several warning signs along that route, so if you’re heading that way, please drive carefully, people!
