Do Not Use “Musical” Horns Or You’ll Be Fined RM2,000 And Get 6 Months’ Jail!

“Musical” horns or rhythmic horns have become a trend among drivers who drive bigger vehicles such as buses, trucks and trailers.

But did you know that it’s actually AGAINST the law to have musical horns? You can be fined up to RM2,000 and imprisoned up to six months if you have a vehicle that uses “musical” horns.

According to Sinar Harian, the Malaysian Road Transport Department (JPJ) has been conducting an operation, “Operasi Penguatkuasaan Hon Melebihi Satu Nada atau Berirama”, against the use of these modified horns across the state of Selangor since March 1st due to complaints that they received from the public.

Its director, Nazli Md Taib said: “A horn is an instrument of a vehicle to be used to warn, remind or signal to other road users through the use of sound.

“However, the use of horns with multiple rhythms can cause confusion among road users and it is very dangerous. Other road users might not understand the message that the driver is trying to convey. It can also be a nuisance if it is used in a residential area,” he said.

Actions can be taken using Section 119(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987:

  1. Fine up to RM2,000 or,

  2. Imprisonment up to 6 months.

Not only that, but equipping your vehicle with the musical horn as an accessory is also an offence under Regulation 24(i) of the Motor Vehicles (Construction and Use) 1959 for installing a horn with more than one tone, even if you don’t use it!

Those who have been compounded are required to visit the nearest JPJ office to make sure that the horn is removed.
